There’s more to membership than special events; many Club members find ‘Stammtische’ – forming friendships and bonds through a variety of undergroups. Join as a member and consider participating in an activity group to take things to the next level. Here’s a look at what’s currently offered (in alphabetical order).
BOOGIETANZ: BoogieTanz is a co-ed adult dance troupe that meets Sundays at 10 a.m. for traditional folk, polka, waltz, ballroom and German line dance lessons and practices – and Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. during Karneval season for Garde cabaret-style dance rehearsals. Participation is $10/year with Club membership. For more information, visit the Calendar, Group Page or email BoogieTanzKabarett@Gmail.com.
DAMENKREIS: The Ladies Circle typically meets at noon the first Wednesday of month for a self-catered luncheon to share stories, recipes, pictures, and to discuss German traditions. German is often spoken, and guests are welcome. On occasion, they take field trips by bus! Learn more by visiting their web page, calling Dagmar Purves at 619-540-1095, or emailing Astrid Brown at damenkreis@gmail.com.
GERMANIA BLASKAPELLE: The Germania Blaskapelle is a house band that performs music typically heard at Oktoberfest or at a German village band concert. They perform their own shows and perform at a variety of Club events, including those that are part of Schützenverein and Karneval. Rehearsals take place Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m. For more information, visit the Calendar, the Group Page, or email GermaniaBlaskapelleSD@gmail.com.
GERMAN STUDY GROUP: Learn German in a friendly, collaborative, small group setting! The Club offers casual beginning and intermediate German language study sessions. These are great opportunities to fine-tune conversational skills, and they are offered various evenings, annually. Dates and times may rotate; please inquire for details: manager@germanclubsandiego.org.
GERMAN THEATER GROUP: Founded in 2016, this is a group of dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers with a knack for acting, whose mission is to bring quality German Theater to San Diego and beyond! They perform a large production every spring. Learn more by visiting the Group Page contacting Director Astrid Ronke at info@GermanTheaterGroupSanDiego.org.
KARNEVAL COMMITTEE & GROUP: ‘Fifth Season’ is a very special time for the Club; Karneval is a months-long celebration that runs from Nov. 11 until Ash Wednesday – basically German Mardi Gras. During that time the Club hosts a series of events, from crowning royalty and an opening night to a holiday party, closing theme party, KinderKarneval and Nubbelverbrennung (end of the season service). A group of dedicated members make up the fun group that supports this annual endeavor. Though most activities are in San Diego, there are trips to Brea and Las Vegas with the optional visit to Cologne, Germany, every few years. When the season starts in late August, they meet every Thursday at 7:30 p.m. Once the season is over, they meet the third Thursday of the month, only, to rest before the next season. Learn more by visiting the Group Page, viewing the Calendar or by emailing Karneval@GermanClubSanDiego.org.
KINDERTANZGRUPPE: This energetic dance group for boys and girls, ages 5 and older, meets Wednesdays at 6 p.m., beginning in mid-August and through the Karneval season (though additional practices may take pace for other events like Maifest and Oktoberfest). Their focus is on embracing and eventually passing down German heritage through traditional folk dancing, interpretive dance, Karneval participation, and other performance opportunities. For more information, view the Calendar or contact Manager@GermanClubSanDiego.org.
SCHUTZENVEREIN: The Schützenverein is a competitive air rifle group made of up of men and women – with a youth contingency – that offers open range nights most Fridays at the Club from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. They also host a regional event and competition in late spring and participate in other local and regional competitions. Get updates and learn about events on in the Calendar, on their Group Page or by sending an email to sdgasschuetzenverein@gmail.com.
SKAT CARD PLAYING GROUP: Skat is a 3-player trick-taking card game devised around 1810 in Altenburg, Germany. Many of the Skat Players who frequent the Club have been playing for years, but new members are welcome. Look for opportunities to learn the game or play at the intermediate level on occasional Friday evenings by following us on Facebook or viewing our Calendar. The Advanced Skat group meetings the second and fourth Thursday of the month.
ZZFC FUßBALL CLUB: ZZFC was founded by a small group of dads joined by their families, a love of soccer – or in German: Fußball – and a connection to Germany. They bring people together to watch live games and play on the Club’s relatively new artificial turf field. Get meetup dates by emailing Peter Sawicki at PJSawicki@Gmail.com.
